[Character information]
Name: Walter Charles Smith, called Wallie. Also, Lord Shonsu. He'll answer to either.
Canon: The Seventh Sword trilogy by Dave Duncan.
Canon Point: A couple months after the end of the third book.
Age: Wallie was 36 when he died. Shonsu was probably in his mid-to-late twenties.

Appearance: Shonsu is very tall (around 7'), brown-skinned, and black-haired. He's very muscular, very strong, and is fairly described as a "slab of beef." Like all the people of the World, he does not grow facial hair. Traditionally, he wears a leather harness over his bare chest, a blue kilt, with a long sword on his back and a knife in his boot (even if a hidden weapon is without honour). His long hair is held in a ponytail with a silver hairclip decorated with a large blue sapphire. Tattooed on his forehead are seven swords; on his right eyelid is a small sword, on his left eyelid is a small feather. Wallie was small, bald, bearded, and blond.
Inventory: A long, expertly crafted sword. A fine, sharp little knife, suitable for throwing. A small money pouch of gold coins.
Abilities: Shonsu is a peerless swordsman -- it's a rare thing for a sworsman to reach the seventh and highest rank before the age of thirity. He has eleven hundred sutras (the laws of swordsman behaviour) committed to memory. Wallie has a bachelor in engineering from the University of Waterloo, and an MBA from Harvard, his area of expertise being geochemical engineering, and before his death managed a petrochemical plant for three years. Neither can read; Shonsu never could, coming from a preliterate society, and Wallie no longer knows how, having had that knowledge removed from his mind. During his time in the World, Wallie thought in English but spoke in the language of the people, automatically translated as he tried to speak aloud, though limited by Shonsu's vocabulary.

History: Lord Shonsu was the greatest swordsman in the World, and he was given a task by the Goddess: end the war between the swordsmen and the sorcerers. He failed, and was punished for his failure.

Wallie Smith was born in Weyback, Saskatchewan, one of two children born to a police detective and a newspaper crime writer. He spent a good part of his adolescence in Binghampton, New York. He was a geochemical engineer efficiently running a petrochemical plant in the Edmonton area when he was bitten by a mosquito on a camping trip and contracted fatal encephalitis (in an area where no mosquitoes carrying encephalitis had ever been known before). One moment he was delirious in a hospital room, and the next he was waking up, very confused, in the hulking, muscular body of Shonsu. He met a god, who told him he was to take over where Shonsu had failed, gave him a lost relic of a sword -- the legendary seventh sword of Chioxin -- all of Shonsu's knowledge and skill without his memories, told him a riddle, and sent him on his way.

Wallie, under the persona of Lord Shonsu, ventured out into the World, learning as he went, and making many mistakes that were unbecoming of a swordsman. He fell in love with the slave Jja, and took as his protegé (and later, as oath brother) a promising and honourable swordsman of the Third rank, named Nnanji. As he investigated the sorcerers, he discovered that they were, in fact, technologically several centuries beyond the rest of the preliterate World. They had developed gunpowder weapons, and distillation, and most importantly, writing. Wallie, with his background, was able to rally the swordsmen in a tryst against the sorcerers, but being an educated man felt unable to justify wiping out the only technology in a primitive and barbarous world. He forced a truce, kept the tryst in place to keep the truce, and passed the seventh sword to Nnanji (who had attained the seventh rank by this time), placing him as ruler of the first empire the World had known, while he remained as advisor, the Merlin to Nnanji's King Arthur.

It was the end of the Age of Legends for the World, which was what the Goddess had wanted. The god reappeared to Wallie, congratulated him, and reminded him that those who serve the Goddess are rewarded well. He was promised a long and happy life, and a miracle was performed: Jja's slave tattoos were removed, leaving Wallie free to marry her.

Personality: Wallie is a generous, peaceable man who genuinely cares about the welfare of other people, and who was always glad to offer what help to the community he could. During his life on Earth, he was an active volunteer with the United Way, Uncles at Large, and the Historical Society, as well as being president of the Avenue Tennis Society. He approaches problems intellectually and scientifically, always looking for the best and most efficient way to accomplish something even if it's a little unconventional. He has a good sense of humour about things, laughs and relaxes into things easily, and likes doing things his own way, never mind what other people say. He was never a particularly religious man, although since having to deal with gods more directly he has a somewhat resigned attitude towards them: they exist, they interfere, they don't explain themselves, and trying to refuse them is generally a Bad Idea.

Shonsu, on the other hand, was a murderous psychopath, so far as Wallie is concerned. The swordsmen of the world have a role almost akin to police, and a garrison of swordsmen in a city certainly acts as law enforcement, but a high ranked swordsman is also a powerful lord capable of doing almost anything he wants to, and Lord Shonsu, as castellan of the swordsmen's lodge in the city of Casr, was certainly corrupt. He had a ferocious temper, would rarely hesitate at killing a man who offended his honour, and had an extremely vigorous sex drive which he never hesitated to satisfy when he wanted and where he wanted. He dealt with problems head on and with violence and anger: when given the divine order to deal with the encroach of the sorcerers, Shonsu formed a tryst of fifty swordsmen and led them to their deaths on a direct charge.

Though Wallie has his own mind, he has Shonsu's body, and emotion is not entirely an intellectual thing. Wallie feels Shonsu's temper and murderous impulses and sex drive. To himself, he refers to Shonsu as a separate person, and struggles sometimes to control Shonsu's fierce emotions and violent urges, though he's gotten better at it with time.

[Samples]
First Person:
[Wallie gives a sudden grin, a boyish expression.] I know I introduced myself as Shonsu, before, but you can call me Wallie. It's... kind of a long story. I don't know if you want to hear that. [He laughs, unselfconsciously.] Or if you'd believe it, either, but I don't mind.

Third Person:
The god had cheated him.

That was the only thing Wallie could think. The Goddess rewarded those who served Her, and Wallie had done as asked, and he had been rewarded -- not with power, not with riches, but with love. Where, though, was Jja now? Where was his stepson, little Vixini? Wherever he was, it was not the World. Where was the planetary ring system in the sky, that the people called the Dream God? Where was the river? The water that lapped at the beach was salt, and the World had no oceans, only rivers. The World had no architecture like he could see at a distance. It was far more like Earth, but he couldn't think that, either. He still had Shonsu's arms, Shonsu's broad chest. Wallie Smith was dead, but to have Shonsu's body on Earth was ridiculous.

And he had Shonsu's rage, which was building in him with a suddenly ferocity. He'd been cheated, this wasn't what he had been promised, and who knew what bloodthirsty nonsense Nnanji would get up to in his fledgling empire without Wallie at his side?

"Damn it!" Wallie drew his sword, far too angry to think about the futility of yelling at nothing, far too angry to think much about his desire, Shonsu's desire to run a convenient scapegoat through. "This isn't what you promised me! God or not, I want an explanation!"

It had to be a god behind this. It had to be.

Anything Else? I guess we'll just have to pretend that Wallie's icons have his facial tattoos. No finding icons that do have that.
